Memories, memories.....

E- ....Yesterday I took our Dad through the old neighborhood per his request. He wanted to pick up a few things at his house. I agreed because this activity would pass some time on a hot, rainy day so we headed toward West Park. Once in front of his childhood home he opened the car door to walk to the house. I had to gently remind him that he didn't live there anymore. He said he knew that but he wanted to see his Dad. I had to choke back some tears as he really thought his parents were inside the house. I rubbed his shoulder and informed him that both of his parents had passed away years ago. He seemed sad to hear this news and looked down at his sandals. He did admit to feeling confused regarding which relatives have passed away so we reviewed who is living and who has entered the Heavens.

I tried to lighten the mood by reflecting on the old corner store where he used to work as we slowly rolled by the vacant real estate and the fire station which provided many 'free' pops for some kids when the firemen left for a call. He did remember the names of many old neighbors and always something fun or crazy about them. We ended our Sunday listening to many tales of our Mom's brothers while enjoying Sunday dinner with some old friends. Who knew that back in the day if you set fire (repeatedly) to an overgrown field in West Park to play baseball the fire dept would eventually give in and provide a controlled burn to allow baseball games to take place there! I guess this is where our Uncle J the firefighter was born!! Once again...we ended the day on a high note with a delightful family dinner....

I know we are creating fun AND crazy memories for our kids...and they are providing us with much of the same. Thanks to the Parkway members and to great friends from our parents' past!
