J: It's that time of year. The weather is finally feeling like fall and the snowbirds are starting to leave town. Many of our parents' friends are heading south, so we've been talking a lot about travel plans for the winter. Last year we traveled to see K in Dallas with our parents and we determined after that trip that their days of travel are finished. They were confused by the airport, the flight, the strange surroundings of K's house - everything different was confusing. The change of pace we were hoping for did not pan out. Change and dementia do not go together. So they are staying in the 44116 for the duration.
But that doesn't stop us from planning. Just about daily we discuss where G would like to go. Lately we've been planning international trips; he'd really like to get back to Ireland. He has very fond memories of their last trip there. Lots of the memories are compilations of trips taken over the years. A trip to Wimbeldon, a Rhine River cruise, a tour of the Vatican - these are all grouped together under "Ireland" in G's mind. These were wonderful trips taken when T and G were both healthy and happy. I would love to be able to revisit some of these places with them. But that's not going to happen. So I'm grateful that the memories bring a smile to his face. In the 44116.
